Csaba Sógor: The new strategy should also consider the improvement of the human rights situation in China

Our Chinese friends must understand that the European Union can only strengthen the bond with regions where freedom of speech is an unquestionable value – stated Csaba Sógor in Strasbourg on Wednesday during the European Parliament’s plenary session, where MEPs debated the new EU strategy regarding China. The RMDSZ MEP expressed his hope that the European Commission also envisions implementing the new strategy based on the same ideological grounds.

On the occasion of National Solidarity Day an exhibition entitled "Encounters, Hungarian travellers and explorers" was opened on 3rd June in Csemadok, at the headquarters of the main Hungarian cultural organization in Slovakia. Hosted by RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor, the bilingual exhibition could be visited at first in Brussels, later in Covasna and Lendava.

During his visit to the Norwegian Parliament on April 8, the President of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Borbély László, discussed with Mr. Svein Roald Hansen, the Vice-President of the Norwegian Parliament and with Ms. Anniken Huitfeldt, the President of the  Foreign Policy and Defense Committee of the Norwegian Parliament, the prospects of even tighter economic cooperation between the two countries, the acceleration of Norwegian investments in Romania, but also issues related to energy security.

Mr. László BORBÉLY, Political Vice-President of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania and Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies has attended the Meeting of the Chairpersons of the Committees on Foreign Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union and the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy in Vilnius, on 27-28 November 2013.

In 2010 the European Parliament granted the Sacharov Prize (founded in 1988 to honour individuals or organisations fighting for human rights and freedom of thought) to Cuban freedom fighter Guillermo Fariñas. The authorities in Cuba prohibited Fariñas from travelling outside the country to the award ceremony. Therefore, at the event held in Strasbourg three years ago his absence was symbolised through an empty chair covered by the Cuban flag.

The founding partners of the Minority European Citizens Initiative have met the Minister-President of the German-speaking Community of Belgium yesterday, April 29, 2013 inBrussels. Mr. Karl-Heinz Lambertz declared in the meeting that he accepts the invitation to join the seven members of the Citizens Committee of the Minority ECI. The leader of the German-speaking Community inBelgiumexplained that the initiative is a huge chance for minorities to get European answers to their concerns.

21.04.2013 - Good news for the citizens’ initiative of the minorities in Europe, which wants to collect one million signatures for diversity in Europe: Valentin Inzko has declared that he wants to join and work for it as one of the founding members. Valentin Inzko is an Austrian diplomat and a Carinthian Slovene.

“Croatia’s legislation regarding national minorities can serve as an example for the other European Union member states” – said EPP MEP Csaba Sógor at the Group’s Bureau meeting held on the 11th-12th of April 2013 in Dubrovnik.  At the opening of the meeting members of the European Parliament discussed Croatia’s preparedness before the accession.
